Voters turn out to support Iowa casino

Iowa is soon to have its own casino after voters in the county of Lyon voted heavily in favour of the construction of a $90 million resort.

The controversial issue was put to the polls earlier this month, after some residents of the county attempted to block the construction of a local casino. However, a vote on the issue showed widespread support for the project with over 60% of voters in favour of going ahead with the construction of the casino.

Almost 70% of Lyon County's registered voters turned out for the poll, surpassing the expectations of local auditor Wayne Grooters.

The new casino will feature around 800 slot machines and 24 card tables, and will form part of a 100 room resort. The facility will also include an 18 hole golf course and a 1,200 seater showroom.

The job opportunities the casino will create probably go some way towards explaining the support for the project in the Lyons community. The casino is expected to create 400 jobs in the community, and will open its doors between 2010 and 2011.
