Mamma Mia! ends record breaking run

On Sunday Las Vegas bade farewell to the longest running musical ever to grace the strip. The day marked the final performance of 'Mamma Mia!', a musical dedicated to 80's op group ABBA.

Mamma Mia! has been playing at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Hotel for the past 6 years, and went on an indefinite hiatus after the final curtain fell on the show on Sunday evening.

"There will be a lot of tears," producer Judy Craymer said before the show began. "It will be an emotional night."

Craymer has not ruled out a possible second run for the show at a later date, possibly at an alternative venue in Las Vegas.

"The door is not closed," Craymer said. "Oh my God no. Vegas is such a great city to be a part of. We never say never. We had always planned to end on a high, so to speak. We would rather leave in demand rather than be closed by demand."

Over 1 million people attended around 2,000 performances of Mamma Mia! during its run at the Mandalay, and audiences routinely sold out the 1,700 seats at the Mandalay theatre.

"I never imagined we would be there as long as we have been," Craymer concluded. "It's rather marvelous."
